The structure of the piñata is in the shape of a polyhedron. While each triangular element is fairly rigid on its own, when completed, provides a sound structure able to withstand heavy loads for its size. This symbolizes the strength we have as a community, when we all come together. The installation is interactive in nature and is hung at a lower level to encourage participation. Piñata “paper” clad with velcro is provided for you to attach to the structure. There are blank papers allowing the participant to contribute to the piece by writing words they feel enhance our lives and spark conversation amongst cultures. The idea is that the community is organically creating this piñata and the rough frame becomes softened by the application of these pieces. It is through this personal engagement of people from different backgrounds that the piñata gets its meaning. The piñata becomes a celebration of life, culture and diversity. As a collaborative firm, we feel this not only captures who we are, but engages participation, embraces diversity and connects us as a community. By placing the entry to one side, the glass wall of the bus stop facing the street guards from splashing caused by traffic. The smaller opening on the opposite side of the entry allows for air flow and ventilation and also prevents waste from accumulating. The shape, color, and pattern gives the bus stop identity. The four glass panels are symmetrical and are assembled with structural silicone, fittings combined with the light fixtures in the ceiling, and fittings in the base. The panels are transparent tempered and curved glass. The translucent and colored areas of the panels can be achieved after manufacturing with polycarbonate spray and laminate decals. The decals can be interchanged for different advertising and media opportunities. At night, Crystalis acts as a beacon for travellers. The glass glows from the solar-powered LED fixtures. Glass has natural fiber-optic qualities which make the edges appear to glow. The building emerging from a pool of water symbolizes Poseidon’s return, bringing prosperity and modernity to the city of Piraeus. The building skin represents this emergence from water. The parameters for the fenestration patterns are based on digital studies of the shadows, rhythms, and reflections created by various water streams. Utilizing both layers of the double skin, the pattern is represented boldly with the large recessed windows and louver system as well as subtly with the strategic placement of colored glass on the inner glazing. Resting in a pool of water created by Poseidon’s trident, the building is reflected to the sky, symbolizing a connection to the gods. This reflecting pool also contains multiple sunken plazas providing opportunities to enjoy the views and the overall experience. The design concept was to create an “object in movement”, breaking the static preconception of tilt-wall construction while generating an architecture that changes with the elements, interacts with the patrons and transforms visually at different perspectives. To achieve that we started looking at patterns based on different heart rates, each attributed to a specific activity. We mapped the program activities and generate a pattern to be embossed on the concrete walls. The pattern on the Tilt Wall panels will constantly interact with the sun, creating shadows and changing the character of the building throughout the day. The shape of the building also was altered from the traditional Tilt Wall box. The displacement of the volumes resembles the three axial body movements in sports. The building, as a body of mass, also moves in horizontal, frontal and sagittal planes by program stimuli. The undulating form was inspired by the fluid movement of Barton Springs. Walk/Wave is comprised of 1” diameter powder-coated stainless steel rods; each rod bent at specific angles to create the wave form. Walk/Wave provides varying levels of transparency depending on distance and the angle at which it is seen. From a distance, Walk/Wave seems to disappear and blend in with the surroundings. This helps dissolve the boundary between the pool and the rest of the Barton Springs tributary. The form of the wave and the rods create a Moray Effect. As visitors move around the pool, the Moray pattern shifts and changes, creating the illusion of movement. Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software were used to design the Walk/Wave. Parametric tools make it easier to quickly create several studies to optimize the design for circulation clearance, rod spacing, rod angles, and overall composition. The rod angles, placement and other data can be calculated within Rhinoceros to be used for fabrication. It acts as an aesthetic and protective barrier for pedestrians, runners, and cyclists underneath the Lamar Bridge. STEM is inspired by the Texas native Bulrush (Scirpus Validus). The Bulrush is one of the most valuable food sources for waterfowl and mammals. It is a shoreline plant that grows in clusters and provides excellent shoreline stabilization and protection. The STEM design resembles the rounded, spongy stem-tunnel structure of the Bulrush that allows it to reach several feet in height. The hexagonal structure uses the least material to create a lattice of cells within a given volume. The hexagon tiles the plane with minimal surface area. This model from nature can be found most commonly in the structure of the beehive, some plant cells, and in bubbles. The shadow patterns created by the hexagonal structure are evocative of water waves and their reflections found along Lady Bird Lake. Harvest takes a progressive approach to a recurring problem – Urban Heat Island Effect. Our concept utilizes the building as a holistic thermal machine, functioning as a battery. The structure is clad in glass with a “veil” of thermobimetal with a photovoltaic coating. This material acts like human skin where heat is captured, stored and then re-distributed for future building energy needs. The coloration and opacity of the screen is determined by the amount of active sun hitting the surface. When the most heat is collected and harvested, the screen is flat – think of the shades being drawn. As seasons change, the metal becomes cooler and we enter into usage mode. The material reacts by lifting in various locations, creating a natural movement and pattern. To further address programmatic requirements, we designed tiered interior terraces that serve as “green roofs”. Instead of simply greening the roof top, we allowed it to migrate onto each level, maximizing opportunity to provide insulation and lower urban air temperatures. As a fully functioning urban farm, the crops will service the tenants, restaurants and marketplace yielding crops such as tomatoes, lemons, microgreens and hops for the onsite brewery. With this all-inclusive approach, we have created a space that not only “greens” the concrete jungle, it provides a sanctuary for the community, pioneering technologies benefiting the city for years to come. Murolove breaks the concept of a wall, it does not divide or isolate us, instead it brings all of us together in a positive and interactive way. When one approaches the piñata installation, instead of being met with fear, they will be encouraged to embrace this experience and take a note from the structure. Each note has a message of love and hope, with the idea of spreading those same messages throughout our community. As the piñata becomes deconstructed by the removal of the paper notes, the lattice structure begins to reveal itself. What is left does not feel like a wall at all. Instead, the community will see a screen of symbolic people joined together. The idea is that this demonstrates our strength as a community. The installation invites participation and is hung at a lower level so that every message can be reached. By hanging the wall at an angle and blocking a portion of the walkway, our design brings people physically together in order to pass the piñata. Similar to that of a traditional piñata, ours will be broken down to bestow a gift, while surprising and delighting those participating.
